Bwiti Dissoumba Fang

What is the Bwiti Fang tradition?

Bwiti Fang is a tradition practiced mostly in Northern Gabon. It originated in the South of Gabon, where the ancient pygmies passed their knowledge to Apindji, Mitsogo, Massango, and Pove peoples.

Over time, the Fang people of Northern Gabon discovered the Bwiti Tradition and started practicing it, enriching the original tradition with their rituals and cosmologies. But the concept remained the same: to experience and study the domain of creation and origins of life.

Branches and types of initiation

The Bwiti Dissoumba Fang tradition has several branches, each with a unique initiation.

One of them is a Mystical branch of Mboumba Eyano, the rituals of which are designed to reveal to a mvon (someone who wants to be initiated) the Knowledge of their true identity, open their heart, and create a link with their Higher Self on a spiritual plane.

Another Spiritual branch is called Biyeyem Ozeng, and its rituals are designed to reveal the origins of life and our place in it.

The purpose of Mimbare branch is to reveal some spiritual truths about the Divine Justice, or the Law of Karma.

All these three initiations are conducted in a special initiatic chambers, proposely designed to elevate the initiate to a higher state of consciousness. The final “exit” ceremony happens in the temple, where bandzi (the initiate) is presented to the Bwiti community.

Finally, the last initiation is called Initiation Directe in French (Direct Initiation), or Dissoumba Di Mouvo Namata and is for those who want to go deeper in understanding the domain of creation. It is conducted in the temple and we recommend first to do one of the first three initiations (or all of them, in any sequence) before participating in Initiation Directe.

Each of these initiations is a week long, starting on Monday morning and ending on Sunday afternoon. They include purification rituals, meditations, contemplation, journaling, and other modalities that you will discover during initiation. You are not allowed to use your mobile phones, cameras or computers during initiations.

At the moment Initiation Directe, Biyeyem Ozeng and Mimbare are offered in Gabon only, while Mboumba Eyano can be experienced in Gabon and also abroad in a retreat space. We can give you more details after your initial enquiry.

Although the initiations are intended to aid people to advance in their spiritual evolution, they as well can help with healing, detoxing and treating addictions. You can also undergo additional healing rituals before you start your initiation. This needs to be discussed in advance.

The process

The Bwiti Fang initiations are expressed in a similar manner for women and men. Women and men can be initiated at the same time.

After your initial enquiry about getting initiated, the Nimas will do a divination to understand which spiritual modalities are needed for you to receive what you’re seeking. We will then confirm your participation. We invite people who wish to advance in their spiritual evolution and increase their understanding of the laws that govern the Universe.

There are many tools used in the process of initiation, including sacred music and movements as well as iboga root bark. Each has a unique role in helping you have a powerful and effective spiritual journey (and to receive what you need to receive).

Although iboga plays a big role in the initiation, the purpose of initiation is not just to eat iboga. Your initiation does not rely on iboga and you’re not here for a ‘psychedelic’ experience.

The Nimas (spiritual masters)

We offer traditional initiations with masters who have spent their life dedicated to this science. They know their work inside and out, living and breathing the science. The Nimas work within a genuine lineage of the Bwiti Tradition. They are respected in their community and in Gabon.

The motivation behind initiation

If you’re seeking healing, detoxing, break free from addictions and spiritual development and feeling called for initiation, we welcome you to contact us. For those seeking shifts and transformation in their personal life, mind and heart, this is for you.

However, if you’re interested in doing this initiation with the purpose of administering iboga to others later (without authorization) or to grow and distribute the plant, we recommend you to search for this in different places.

We work closely with Nimas and know that it takes years of thorough study under the guidance of spiritual masters. It is extremely risky (physically and spiritually) to administer iboga to people without appropriate training and connection to a lineage (for more about this, read “Two Faces of the Bwiti Tradition”).
